Abstract

Diet therapy is the very first step in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), regardless of the type of stool changes. The Rome criteria IV (Rome IV) serve as the fundamental recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders in patients of different ages. According to this document, the dietary protocol called the low-FODMAP diet (Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Monosaccharides and Polyols) has the greatest evidence base as a dietary recommendation. In this article, our goal was to examine what role nutrition plays in the formation and maintenance of IBS symptoms, as well as to examine other nutritional protocols used by patients and physicians — vegetarianism, gluten-free and lactose-free diets, and others. It is concluded that it is necessary to conduct further clinical studies investigating the effectiveness of the low-FODMAP diet in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with the possibility of its further individualization.
